Selecting Alternative Communication

In this autism video, you’ll cover these learning objectives:

  • Determine if your child is a candidate for an alternative communication system
  • List three benefits of using an alternative communication system for a non-vocal child
  • Identify four important considerations for choosing an alternative communication system
Child with Autism Learning to Communicate

Children with autism who have a lack of or limited ability to communicate vocally will require an alternative form of communication. Selecting a system to use can be a difficult decision to make. Autism Education & Behavior Training Service offers an educational resource that explains important considerations for choosing a system.

Our training, “Selecting an Alternative Communication System” uses video examples and step-by-step instructions that illustrate the advantages of the two most common alternative communication choices so that parents can make an informed decision.

Developed in collaboration with Thomas M. Caffrey, M.Ed., BCBA, “Selecting an Augmentative Communication System” provides practical guidance for those working directly with children with autism on a daily basis.
